Yarn bombing, yarnbombing, yarnstorming, guerrilla knitting, urban knitting or graffiti knitting is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yarn_bombing]
Yarnbombing Amsterdam! is an open space for handmade-urban-art-collective and selfless creation, specifically using yarn/wool by crochetting or knitting. It means to be a meeting point where everybody is welcome to learn, teach, experiment, propose and share ideas and, of course, MAKE.
For me, “Yarnbombing” also means take our imagination and creativity to the limit, thinking that another reality is possible, dreaming, learning how to work together, sharing, and expressing ourselves freely. Also, from a personal experience, I can confirm the big influence that crochet can have in our health, mostly mental health; using it as a meditative practice to relax and empower self-esteem, as well as a perfect excuse to socialize.
The space becomes real in every Sunday’s meeting (check the “Agenda” for next dates and locations). where we LEARN something new each day from someone, we CREATE something with it, we SHARE our creation for a collective art project (also words, food, fun…!), and then we TEACH what we’ve learnt to someone new. And, unexpectedly, every single meeting has turn from just a simple step to get something into a goal itself.
Small things together make a big strong one!
